Charlotte PD, city leaders frustrated after mass shooting left one dead, five others hurt

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (QUEEN CITY NEWS) — From city leaders to law enforcement, there is frustration after another violent weekend in Uptown Charlotte.

According to CMPD, two people suspected of being involved in a mass shooting early Sunday morning are now in custody.

“I don’t think anybody accepts this behavior. I can assure you that none of our officers or detectives do. I want the community to be angry about this,” said Deputy Chief Ryan Butler.

One person was killed, and five others were injured.

Witnesses say the incident began with an altercation at Encore Nightclub, but the club insists the shooting happened nearby, not inside the establishment.

During a press conference on Monday evening, Chief Butler told reporters the investigation is ongoing.

“We’ve had homicide detectives working this case since two in the morning on Sunday. They haven’t stopped other than taking little breaks for rest here and there. The squad has not gone home,” he said.

Butler, who said there was a large CMPD presence in and around the vicinity of the shooting, added that the department will review what changes can be made to improve deterrence.

“We look into a variety of things regarding security profile, the businesses, the security practices that they have in place for their patrons,” said Butler.

CMPD is asking for anyone who may have been near the scene Sunday morning or has video of what happened to give them a call at 704-432-TIPS.
