WASHINGTON (NEXSTAR) – President Donald Trump is facing renewed criticism over the so-called Epstein files, after the Department of Justice denied the existence of a client list connected to convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein.

Democrats, including House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-N.Y.), are demanding answers from the Trump administration following years of promises to release Epstein-related documents.

“Option one, they lied for years; option two, they’re engaging in a cover-up,” Jeffries said. “This was a conspiracy that Donald Trump, Pam Bondi and these MAGA extremists have been fanning the flames of for the last several years, and now the chickens have come home to roost.”

Last week, the DOJ released a memo stating that no such client list exists and reaffirmed its ruling that Epstein’s 2019 death was a suicide.

Trump defended U.S. Attorney General Pam Bondi on his Truth Social platform. Bondi previously suggested she had access to a client list, but walked back those comments last week.

“I was asked a question about the client list, and my response was, it’s sitting on my desk to be reviewed — meaning the file,” Bondi said.

Trump also lashed out online, accusing political opponents of exploiting the controversy for political gain.

“For years it’s been Epstein over and over again,” Trump wrote. “Why are we giving publicity to files written by Obama, crooked Hillary… and the losers and criminals of the Biden administration?”

House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) distanced himself from the controversy, saying he does not have access to the relevant information.

“The White House has a lot more information about that than I’m privy to,” Johnson said. “So I have to trust that they’ll make the right decision.”

The debate continues to stir reaction across political and social platforms. On X, Elon Musk weighed in, writing, “Just release the files as promised.”
