Officer Andrés Vásquez-Lasso was shot and killed in March 2023 while chasing Steven Montano, who was wanted in connection to a domestic call.
Prosecutors said Vásquez-Lasso exchanged gunfire with Montano, and was shot multiple times. He was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital where he later died.
The shooting happened on the 5200 block of South Spaulding Avenue in the Gage Park neighborhood, near a school and playground where children were forced to cover.
Montano is charged with first-degree murder in the officer’s death. He is also facing a number of additional felony charges.
Montano is being held without bond.
Vásquez-Lasso had been with the Chicago Police Department for five years. He left behind a wife and family internationally. He was 32-years-old and an immigrant from Colombia.
