Drier start to the week, Potential tropical trouble in the Gulf late week

LAFAYETTE, La. (KLFY) – Showers and thunderstorms brought some cooling relief to Acadiana today. These storms will settle overnight, though a coastal shower or two will be possible. Temperatures will hold in the 70s overnight.

Monday will start out quiet as temperatures warm fast under partly cloudy skies. Scattered storms develop around lunchtime and become more widespread into the afternoon hours. Temperatures will reach the lower 90s before the rain arrives with feels-like temperatures over 100 degrees. Drier weather settles in for midweek with highs in the mid 90s and feels-like temperatures around 105 degrees. Only one or two storms will develop in the afternoon hours.

Our forecast past midweek depends entirely on an area of low pressure that is expected to move into the Gulf by Tuesday. This low has the potential to develop into a tropical system, but there’s still a lot of questions to be answered before we know whether that will occur. First, there is still a chance of it moving into Georgia and the Southeast, taking any and all impacts away from Acadiana. This is the least likely scenario to play out. More likely is that this low will cross Florida and enter into the Gulf. Once in the Gulf, we will have to see if it stays close to the coast – bringing rainier times to the region but no tropical impacts – or if it stays further offshore, allowing for tropical development and greater impacts to Acadiana.
