The president announced that the U.S. will send weapons to NATO who will then transfer the equipment to Ukraine. The president also threatened steep tariffs on countries that do business with Russia in an attempt to Russia’s ability to finance the war.
100% secondary tariffs will be placed on countries that do business with Russia if a peace deal is not reached within 50 days.
“We’re going to be doing very severe tariffs if we don’t have a deal in 50 days,” Trump said.
The new announcement is a shift in the United States stance against Russia. When he took office in January President Trump promised to end the war quickly.
“I’m disappointed in President Putin because I thought we would have had a deal two months ago, but it doesn’t seem to get there,” Trump said.
Trump’s stance toward Ukraine has changed since he criticized Ukrainian President Volodomyr Zelenskyy during an infamous Oval Office meeting in February.
The new aid for Ukraine is being financed by European nations.
