In Choudrant, deputies attempted to conduct a traffic stop around 9:25 PM, but the driver fled. During the pursuit, deputies reported seeing the driver holding a handgun out the driver’s side window.
The chase came to a stop on US 167 near Paradise Point Lane, where the armed suspect exited the vehicle. Deputies issued multiple commands for the suspect to drop the weapon. When the suspect failed to comply and made movements that appeared threatening to authorities, they opened fire.
Emergency medical services were immediately requested to perform life-saving efforts at the scene. Despite those efforts, the suspect died at the scene.
Another individual was also struck and transported to an area hospital for minor injuries. No deputies were injured. At this time, the investigation remains ongoing, and more information will be released when it becomes available.
