CHICAGO — Dozens of Jeeps made their way up DuSable Lake Shore Drive on Sunday, drawing attention not just for the long line of vehicles but for the message behind the movement: ending gun violence.

The caravan of Jeeps began on South Rhodes Avenue and traveled roughly 10 miles north, ending near Belmont Harbor.

Along the way, the ride caused some brief traffic congestion with so many Jeeps using the same exit, but police worked with organizers to ease the flow.

Several Jeep clubs from around Chicago took part in the event, which is part of a national effort spanning 15 states, according to organizers.

“I’ve lost family members in Englewood, which as we know is a high-crime area,” Challen Holmes, President of Chicago Jeep League, said. “It’s very personal for me, I’m sure it’s personal for others… if not directly, then someone that they know… cousins, family members, it hits home for all of us.”

Recent data from the Chicago Police Department gives some hope for participants as shootings citywide are down 40% compared to this time last year.
