GREENFIELD, Ind. — A building was damaged during a multi-vehicle crash in downtown Greenfield late Sunday afternoon.

In a Facebook post, the Sugar Creek Township Fire Department reported that its crews were dispatched to 107 W. Main St. in Greenfield around 4:48 p.m. When its crews arrived at the scene, they found a car that had collided with J.W. Riley’s Emporium.

Per SCTFD, the driver who struck the building experienced a medical emergency behind the wheel. First responders transported the individual from the crash scene to a local hospital.

According to the Greenfield Police Department, the driver struck J.W. Riley’s Emporium after they were involved in a three-vehicle crash.

Officials with the Hancock County 911 Center confirmed that first responders accounted for everyone inside J.W. Riley’s Emporium after the crash. Nobody inside the building was injured when the crash happened, per the 911 center.

SCTFD reported that its firefighters, alongside members of the Greenfield Fire Territory, worked together to stabilize the structure after the crash. Crews used a lace-post box shoring system to ensure the building’s structural integrity. Per SCTFD, lace-post box shoring systems are capable of supporting up to 32,000 pounds.

One firefighter also sustained a minor injury while working at the crash scene. That firefighter was checked out by medics at the scene.

First responders have not provided an update on the medical status of the driver who struck the building.
