BIG COUNTRY, Texas (KTAB/KRBC) – Currently, six counties are under a burn ban, even though there is no drought occurring at the moment.

Meteorologists from BigCountryHomepage.com are sharing information about the risk of fire danger amid the drought improvements.

“Even though we’ve finally made it out of drought due to recent rainfall, fire danger doesn’t disappear overnight. Burn bans are still in place across parts of the Big Country because the risk is still very real, especially with dry grasses and summer heat that can return quickly after a rain event,” KTAB Meteorologist Katalina Bell said.

The Texas A&M Forest Service shared tips on how to extinguish a fire:

  • Never leave a campfire unattended; allow the wood to burn completely to ash if possible.
  • Pour water on all embers until the hissing sounds stop.
  • Stir the campfire ashes and water with a shovel.
  • Scape logs to remove embers.
  • Stir and make sure everything is wet and cold to the touch.
