Original Story

LA SAL, Utah (ABC4) — Deer Creek Fire, located one mile north of La Sal, Utah, is exhibiting erratic fire behavior, according to an update from Utah Interagency Fire on Saturday. The wildfire has grown to over 7,200 acres and is 0% contained as it pushes further into forested areas — evacuations remain in place at this time.

Around 250 people have been forced to evacuate their homes as the Deer Creek Fire near La Sal and the Utah-Colorado border in San Juan County continues its rapid spread. The fire damaged 10 structures and destroyed five, such as sheds, and some local power infrastructure.

A total of 80 structures are being threatened by the fire, prompting the evacuation order as a safety precaution. The San Juan County Sheriff advised residents within five miles of the fire or Mountain Shadow Estates to evacuate Friday night. This evacuation is still in effect.

Those who have been displaced are advised to go to the Community Center at Highway 46 in La Sal. Additionally, a closure order is in place for the affected areas of the Manti-La Sal National Forest.

The Great Basin Incident Management Team 4 will assume command of the wildfire incident tomorrow, July 13. Fire behavior has reportedly remained erratic, with shifting winds pushing the fire further into forested areas.

“Dozers are being used to help build containment lines, and crews continue to prioritize structure protection,” the Deer Creek Fire Incident Update states. “Evacuations remain in place, along with area closures on the Manti-La Sal National Forest.”

A mapping flight is reportedly scheduled for later today, July 12, with update acreage expected this evening.

A total of 190 personnel are responding to this incident.

This is a developing story. ABC4 will update this post as new information becomes available.
