Grass poking through cracks in the court and the rusted basketball goals — this is what the court at Al Polin Park used to look like. Now, a new basketball court is at the 50-year-old park.
The WNBA All-Star Legacy Project completely redesigned and refurbished this midtown court. A local artist designed the court and spent two weeks painting it on her hands and knees. These kids playing on it is exactly why she worked so hard.
Kieria Ready, the court designer, said, “Fun, bright art makes you want to be there. That’s what makes you feel like my community has something, that’s what makes you want to stay in your city, is when you have things that are beautiful around you, so I’m glad I was able to bring that here.”
This basketball court isn’t the only major change coming to Al Polin Park. $600 thousand in Lilly Endowment money will overhaul the playground. The project will break ground in the next few weeks.
