Cicero police said an armed robbery at an area gas station in the 5100 block of W. Roosevelt involving multiple suspects sparked the pursuit.
“Multiple vehicles, with multiple suspects, reportedly approached a courier who was handling cash for a business located there. Approximately $70,000 in cash was believed to have been taken,” according to a Cicero town spokesman.
Cicero police pursued two vehicles, with the chase ending in the area of W. West End Avenue and North Kostner Avenue in Chicago. The pursuit involved a Chicago squad car being struck, though officials reported no injuries.
Officers took two people into custody at the scene.
Authorities also pursued a white Honda sedan, which SkyCam9 captured driving at a high rate of speed in an attempt to evade police, to an apartment building in the 4400 block of W. West End Avenue. There, police placed two more individuals into their custody.
Additionally, responding law enforcement officials identified a black Chrysler involved in the armed robbery. Illinois State Police later located the vehicle traveling westbound on I-290, prompting a pursuit onto I-294 and I-94 into Indiana. Two suspects fled the vehicle from I-94 in Hammond and ran to the Little Calumet River. The Cicero town spokesman stated that both individuals surrendered while in the water.
All told, six suspects are in custody in connection with the incident.
The investigation is ongoing.
