Shreveport non-profit feeling impact of tariffs and federal cuts

SHREVEPORT, La. (KTAL/KMSS) – A local non-profit organization is feeling the heat of recent tariffs and federal cuts.

Basic Necessities works to provide diapers, wipes, period products, and incontinence supplies for free to those facing financial hardship across the Ark-La-Tex.

According to their website, public assistance programs like SNAP, WIC and Medicaid do not cover the cost of those products unless they are part of a doctor-prescribed treatment plan for a medical condition.

Meagan Banai, the Program Director for Basic Necessities, notes how the tariffs are affecting the organization.

“We purchase our diapers in bulk from different companies. Around February or March, we were contacted by all of these different companies and told that, in addition to the increase in cost of these cases of diapers, there was going to be an additional tariff charge,” she explains.

In addition to the effect of tariffs on the cost of goods, Banai also says they are experiencing a staff shortage due to federal budget cuts.

They will also be hosting their “Well Mom, Well Baby” event on July 19, 2025, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the Highland Center Gym.

There will be free resources and supplies, along with music, food and kid-friendly activities. Registration for the event ends on Monday, July 14.
