The shooting, which resulted in the death of Fernando Fernandez, happened in the early hours of Nov. 10, 2024. A woman reportedly called 911 and said that Fernandez was stealing her car from their West Jordan home.
Police arrived on scene and learned that Fernandez was threatening “suicide by cop,” while there were five children present. Police said Fernandez ran inside the home carrying a sword. He reportedly stayed at the door, telling officers to shoot him, and wouldn’t put down the sword.
Officers reportedly tried opening the door, but Fernandez opened it, holding the sword. As he came out, an officer fired his handgun three times. Police put Fernandez in handcuffs and medically assessed him, but found no gunshot wounds.
“After conducting an Officer Involved Critical Incident (OICI) review, the Salt Lake County District Attorney’s Office has declined to file criminal charges for the November 10, 2024, use of deadly force by a West Jordan Police Department officer against Fernando A. Fernandez,” a press release from the DA’s Office states. “Mr. Fernandez’s criminal case continues to work its way through the criminal justice system.”
