According to the Louisiana State Police, troopers with Troop L began investigating the crash, which happened on Interstate 59 near the Interstate 12 interchange with St. Tammany parish, around 10 a.m.
Troopers say that 64-year-old Barry D. Stockstill, of Picayune, Mississippi, was driving a 2001 Mercury Mountaineer north on I-59 while pulling a trailer. For reasons that are being investigated, the vehicle veered off of the road, hit a tree and turned over.
Stockstill was reportedly properly restrained, but sustained fatal injuries and was declared dead on scene. A passenger in the vehicle sustained moderate injuries and was taken to a local hospital for treatment.
A toxicology sample was taken from Stockstill as part of the ongoing investigation.
