Man arrested after mass shooting at South Philadelphia lounge

PHILADELPHIA (WPHL) — The Philadelphia Police Department announced Friday night that a suspect has been arrested in connection with a mass shooting at a South Philadelphia lounge earlier this month.

Police arrested Michael Welton, 43, of Philadelphia, who has been charged with attempted murder, aggravated assault, possessing an instrument of crime, and recklessly endangering another person.

The mass shooting happened just before 4 a.m. on July 5 at the 7 Elements lounge near 11th Street and Washington Avenue.

Police believe an argument outside the club escalated into a knife fight. While security attempted to intervene, police say gunfire erupted on the balcony, including an on-duty security guard who admitted to firing a gun. The identity of the security guard is unknown.

The shooting injured eight people. Police say the investigation remains active and ongoing.
