‘Impossible Town’ highlights West Virginia town contaminated with cancer-causing chemical

MINDEN, W.Va. (WOWK) — The small town of Minden, West Virginia, has been contaminated with man-made cancer-causing chemicals called polychlorinated biphenyls, or PCBs, for nearly 50 years.

The documentary “Impossible Town” follows the story of the location and a doctor who works to fulfill her father’s dream of saving it.

Dr. Ayne Amjad hatched a plan to relocate the town away from the chemicals, even purchasing 97 acres of land in Odd, West Virginia. However, the town did not want to relocate. Many of them do not have the financial means to do so, or they just did not want to, something Dr. Amjad says is just reality.

“But this is real life. There’s no happy ending. This is what has occurred. So, I think for some people it might be confusing or difficult to watch, but that’s what life is, is the road it took us down,” Dr. Amjad said.

Meg Griffiths and Scott Faris are co-directors of the film. Griffiths says this is something that they had to deal with when telling a real-life story.

“That’s the fun and challenge of making a documentary. You never know where it’s going to go because it’s real life,” Griffiths said.

Faris, a West Virginia native from Bridgeport, says he applauds Dr. Amjad for the work she has done over the years, even though the town ultimately decided to stay in Minden.

“One of the things that we end up talking about again and again that we learned from Ayne is that heroism takes many different forms,” Faris said, “Being a hero doesn’t always mean that you win every battle.”

Amid the COVID-19 pandemic, Dr. Amjad was appointed as the State Health Officer, a position that put her in charge of the state’s COVID response. While in the position, Dr. Amjad continued her work to help the people of Minden with the contamination they had been facing for the past five decades.

The documentary began filming in 2019 and was released in 2023. When it premiered, the film held screenings at film festivals throughout the country.

“Impossible Town” will be available on streaming starting July 15 on PBS+ and on Amazon Prime Video, Apple TV and Comcast on July 16.
