The injured person was taken by Dare County EMS to Dare County Airport, and was then flown by Dare MedFlight to Sentara Norfolk General Hospital, according to Steve Kovacs, deputy director of emergency management and fire marshal for Dare County.
Three vehicles and one boat was also destroyed in the fire, and a neighboring home sustained minor damage, he said.
Numerous 911 calls concerning a house explosion in a residential neighborhood on the north end of Roanoke Island came in around 3:15 p.m., Kovacs said.
Roanoke Island Volunteer Fire Department, along with the Dare County Sheriff’s Office and Dare County EMS were sent to the scene, along with the Dare County Fire Marshal’s Office and the North Carolina Forest Service.
A sheriff’s deputy arrived to find the house in flames, and one person injured, Kovacs said..
It had been an average Friday for Dogwood Trail residents — until it wasn’t.
Residents in the area said it felt like the entire neighborhood was shaken by the explosion.
“The floor shook, and I knew it was something big,” said next-door neighbor Charles Henderson.
That’s when it turned into something terrifying.
“The house right over here,” Henderson said, pointing to the house on fire, “one room was completely in a blaze, and within a minute, I’d say the whole house was burning up.”
Dare County Sheriff’s Office Chief Deputy Jeff Derringer told 10 On Your Side that they responded to the scene shortly after 3 p.m. Friday, with early reports indicating the two-alarm blaze was caused by a propane tank explosion.
Fire Chief Bill Walker called for the second alarm, which brought units from Nags Head Fire & Rescue, Kill Devil Hills Fire & Rescue, along with the Manns Harbor and the Colington volunteer fire departments, according to Kovacs.
Crews worked to contain the fire and keep it from spreading into the surrounding woods, Kovacs said. While crews were able to control the fire in about an hour, they continued to work on hot spots into the evening, with the final units clearing at 9:17 p.m., Kovacs said.
The Dare County Fire Marshal’s Office and the Dare County Sheriff’s Office have begun an investigation into the fire, with help from the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation and the Office of the State Fire Marshal. Kovacs said the investigation would continue into next week, with more information to be released then.
Nearby neighbors said they just hope whoever was inside the home at the time will be OK.
“We just pray for them,” Henderson said. “It was terrible what happened, and we just hope they’ll be OK.”
