Fayetteville man accused of stealing mail from Union County residents: Sheriff

UNION COUNTY, N.C. (QUEEN CITY NEWS) — A Fayetteville man has been arrested after allegedly stealing mail for weeks from residents in Unionville, according to the Union County Sheriff’s Office.

In June, deputies received multiple reports of mail thefts in and around Unionville, primarily near Highway 218. About eight people reportedly had their mail taken out of their mailboxes, with many important items stolen, officials said.

After interviewing victims and witnesses, and using license plate reader technology, investigators identified the suspect as 41-year-old Juan Peterson-Gannon.

Investigators believe Peterson-Gannon made multiple trips to Union County, stealing mail during each visit in search of cash, checks and other valuables. Items he deemed worthless were thrown along the road as he left the area.

Peterson-Gannon was taken into custody on Highway 218 near his previously targeted locations, deputies said. He’s booked in the Union County Detention Center under a $375,000 bond for multiple felony and misdemeanor charges related to the mail theft incidents.

Authorties say this is still an active investigation. Detectives anticipate that more charges may be pressed against Peterson-Gannon, including possible charges from surrounding counties.
