“It’s big because it is the largest tax cuts, spending cuts, welfare reform, energy deregulation, and security investment in the history of the United States of America. It is beautiful because of the good that it does for our country and our fellow countrymen,” Arrington said.
Local leaders joined the congressman in discussions on law enforcement, military affairs, energy, business, and other topics, alongside a few members of political action groups. Arrington expressed his belief that West Texans will benefit from the bill, citing the baby bonus and increased funding for agriculture and military spending.
“The current safety net, based on the last farm bill, is irrelevant. We need a new safety net that reflects the realities of this economy, namely inflation. 60 plus billion dollars. To do that, you wouldn’t be able to do it. I wouldn’t have been able to do it in bipartisan farm bill negotiations,” said Arrington.
Glen Pugh, a business owner from Abilene, spoke at the conference. He shared his enthusiasm for the bill’s focus on entrepreneurship, expressing his belief that it will lower barriers for those looking to start their own businesses.
“Most of the businessmen I know that just started up in their garage, they have to have another job to pay all those taxes and also to pay their employees a wage that will make them want to come to work, and we’re hopeful and optimistic that this bill is gonna help with some of that,” Pugh said.
Major General John Nichols of the Abilene Military Affairs Council expressed his support for the budget increase, stating that he anticipates only positive outcomes from increased investment in the armed forces. Of this budget increase, approximately $4.5 billion is designated to expedite the onboarding of the B-21 bomber, which is expected to be Dyess Air Force Base’s next flagship aircraft.
“It really robusts the investment not only in current war fighting capabilities, but as we look to the future. I think Dyess stands to do very, very well by this bill,” said Nichols.
Taylor County Sheriff Ricky Bishop attended the event, discussing the bill’s increased spending on border security overall. Bishop noted a noticeable difference in approach between administrations and expressed a strong preference for the current White House.
In closing, Texas Senate District 71 Representative Stan Lambert spoke on his anticipation for the border wall restitution payments that Texas is set to receive in the bill.
“I am particularly excited about the fact that the state of Texas is due to be reimbursed for the money that we have been spending over the last six or seven terms that I’ve been in Austin. On border security, I think that number is somewhere in the $10 to $11 billion range. We can certainly put that money to good use in other programs that are going to be beneficial to all Texans and certainly here in West Texas,” Lambert said.
President Donald Trump signed the ‘One Big Beautiful Bill on July 4, 2025, just after it narrowly squeaked through the Senate with Vice President J.D. Vance casting the tie-breaking vote.
