COLUMBUS, Ga. (WRBL) — The second suspect accused of the murder of Daryus Bryant appeared in court on Thursday.

Semaj Copeland turned himself into authorities on Monday after he was accused of the murder. He pleaded not guilty on Thursday in recorders court.

Copeland is currently charged with murder and three counts of aggravated assault.

Court testimony on Thursday revealed that Copeland was the driver of the vehicle used in the murder and is also Daryus Bryant’s cousin. His attorney, Mark Shelnutt, believes there is no evidence that Copeland was aware of Bryant being the car.

“Their theory is that Semaj may have been driving… even if he was in the car it wouldn’t have been him if he was the shooter. In a worse case scenario even if they place him in the car, he was just in the car with somebody at the wrong time.”

The case is now headed over to superior court. Copeland is being held without bound.
