Rockford Fire Department warns against driving through floodwaters

The Fire Department takes the lead in response to flooding calls, with a Swift Water Rescue Team and an inflatable craft that can be used in emergencies.

The teams train to make sure they’re ready ahead of time.

“It’s very nerve-wracking for anyone who’s been stuck in flood waters,” said Division Chief of Operations Todd Monahan. “As water rises, it’s very scary. Be aware, monitor weather situations.  If you live in a flood-prone area, take necessary precautions.  If you’re in your vehicle and you see barricades, please don’t go around the barricades. Those barricades are in place for your safety.”

The Fire Department says, “turn around, don’t drown,” since moving water can pick up and move a car.

If a driver does get stuck, the advice is to remain calm and call 911.
