Remember the Clipper Card outage on July 1? Here’s how much it cost BART

SAN FRANCISCO (KRON) — A one-day Clipper Card outage earlier this month cost BART hundreds of thousands of dollars, KRON4 has learned. According to Bay Area Rapid Transit officials, the July 1 outage cost BART $382,000 in lost revenue.

The system for Clipper Cards, which are used for payment on nearly all transit systems in the San Francisco Bay Area, experienced a widespread outage on the same day many transit systems were raising their rates.

The issue was resolved by around 1 p.m. on the same day, but not before it cost BART nearly $400,000 in lost revenue. According to BART officials, there were 103,379 paid exits on the day Clipper went down.

BART officials tell KRON4 they plan on seeking reimbursement for the loss.
