When the state trooper tried to conduct a traffic stop on a black Chevy Suburban that matched the description of the stolen vehicle, the driver sped away, according to a release from ISP.
The driver, identified as 23-year-old Sharod Leon Kenzo Hicks, got off the freeway and led the police through various back roads, allegedly trying to shake the officer. As Hicks approached an intersection, the Suburban sideswiped a truck while turning onto State Road 234. After racing down multiple country roads, the car ended up heading south on SR 9.
The state trooper attempted to use “stop sticks” to safely end the pursuit, but ISP said Hicks was able to avoid them, and the chase continued.
Hicks abruptly got out of the car while it was still moving, and it crashed into a tree right after that, according to ISP. He then proceeded to run away into a nearby cornfield. After the trooper called for assistance using a K9 unit, Hicks was finally arrested.
Hicks was taken to a nearby hospital after injuring himself when jumping out of the moving car. He was taken into custody, charged with resisting law enforcement, vehicle theft, aggressive driving, reckless operation of a vehicle in a highway worksite, criminal recklessness, leaving the scene of the accident, reckless driving, and three other unnamed active arrest warrants out of Ohio.
Hicks is being held in Henry County jail pending further investigation.
