Oakland airport name change approved by Port of Oakland commission

(KRON) — A proposal to once again add “San Francisco” to the name of Oakland’s airport has been approved by the Port of Oakland Board of Commissioners. The pivot to the new name of “Oakland San Francisco Bay Airport,” marks the second time Port of Oakland officials have moved to add the name of their across-the-Bay neighbors to the East Bay airport.

The latest name changes comes less than a year after Oakland airport was ordered by the courts to stop using the name “San Francisco Bay Oakland Airport,” which was approved by the Port commissioners in April of last year.

The board voted unanimously on Thursday to approve the latest name change.

“We are proud to be a central gateway to the Bay Area, and we’re proud to embrace a name that reflects both our local roots and regional reach,” said Craig Simon, Director of Aviation at the Port of Oakland.

“The current renaming places Oakland at the front of the OAK brand while informing travelers that Oakland is a convenient and logical starting point for travelers to the San Francisco Bay Area. The new name coincides with major renovations at the airport’s retail spaces and amenities that modernize and elevate the customer experience, and the launch of a host of Oakland- and East Bay-themed retail and restaurant concessions at OAK that showcase the airport’s pride in its local businesses and products,” the airport said in a press release announcing the name change.

The airport’s three-letter airport code will remain OAK and the “I Fly Oak” branding logo will also remain intact, according to airport officials.
