The school system says it opened an investigation into Kenneth Butchee after getting a report about inappropriate actions with a student. Butchee worked for the school district as both a coach and substitute teacher.
Rockingham County Schools says that while Butchee was a substitute across the district, he coached at Reidsville Middle School and most frequently was a sub there as well.
Following the school district’s initial investigation, he was placed on administrative leave and the case was referred to the Rockingham County Sheriff’s Office.
On Thursday, Butchee was charged with:
He was given a $100,000 secured bond.
During the investigation, the Rockingham County Sheriff’s Office said Butchee had contact with a student starting in May 2025 until June 2025.
Investigators do not believe inappropriate activity happened on school grounds during school hours.
Rockingham County Schools says that it is cooperating fully with investigators and the district attorney with their investigation into Butchee.
Butchee has been fired from both of his roles with the school district and has been banned from all school district property.
