A video of the suspect carrying a gun near the school was repeatedly shared on social media on May 14, according to the Berkeley Police Department. Berkeley High School staff contacted police about the video and the Berkeley Police Department opened an investigation.
“The video appeared to show a former student at the intersection of Milvia Street and Allston Way, near school grounds, with what looked like an AR-15-style rifle concealed in his waistband,” BPD said. “Youth Services detectives immediately launched an investigation and were able to identify the individual.”
Police served a search warrant at the man’s Berkeley home. During the search, detectives found several illegal gun parts, ammo and a short-barrel rifle without proper registration — commonly referred to as a ghost gun.
On Wednesday, the Alameda County District Attorney’s Office charged the suspect with multiple felonies, including possession of large-capacity magazines, possession of a short-barrel rifle, possession of a ghost gun.
