However, many voters wonder if Kansas lawmakers can do anything to offset some of the cuts in the federal spending bill.
27 News spoke with a Kansas House Democrat. He told us that ideally, Democrats would like to pass legislation to protect those who rely on Medicaid as well as the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP).
But with a Republican supermajority in the Senate and House, Democrats will have a difficult time passing any legislation of their own. House Democrat Kirk Haskins believes they’ll need to focus on impacting Republican-led legislation.
“When you don’t have the votes, the likelihood of pushing it out outright is really difficult,” Haskins said. “What we can do is be involved in the conversation, which is something I try to do. We can do this by, when we’re debating a bill on the House floor, look at amendments that might enhance or improve. Now, to get the supermajority to agree to that requires a lot of work.”
Democrats are hoping to rally voters ahead of next year’s midterm elections. Their goal is to break the Republican supermajority in the House, something they haven’t done since 2010.
