Connecticut State Police release dashcam video of crash that injured 2 troopers on Interstate 91 in Enfield

ENFIELD, Conn. (WTNH) — Connecticut State Police released dash camera video showing the crash on Interstate 91 in Enfield, which injured two troopers who were on the side of the road investigating a separate crash.

The crash happened just after 7 a.m. Thursday between Exits 47W and 48.

State police said the 18-year-old driver from Waterbury was traveling in the left lane when he drove through standing water and lost control, spinning across three lanes before hitting the back of one of the police vehicles that was parked on the shoulder. The first police vehicle was pushed forward into the other.

Troopers Matthew Cerri and Christopher Genovese both sustained injuries. State police said Genovese’s injuries were considered serious, while Cerri had only minor injuries. Sources told News 8 that the troopers are “lucky to be alive.”

Three other people involved also suffered minor injuries.

The dashcam video shows the driver driving through water on the left side of the roadway, spinning out, then hitting the state police vehicle.

Colonel Daniel Loughman, Commanding Officer of the CSP, issued the following statement on Friday, reminding drivers to slow down and move over for emergency responders.

“Yesterday’s collision, which left two Troopers seriously injured, was absolutely preventable, and this is a reminder to exercise the utmost caution when approaching any emergency vehicles stopped on the side of the road,” Loughman said. “Slow down immediately, regardless of your lane, and safely move over to create space for emergency responders. The Connecticut State Police remain committed to the safety of all residents and travelers on Connecticut roadways, and we need the public’s assistance at all times to continue our mission. Please do your part- stay alert, obey all signals, and prioritize safety at all times behind the wheel.”

No charges have been filed as the investigation continues.
