SAN DIEGO (FOX 5/KUSI) — As Southern California gears up for a summer packed with major events and celebrations, the Amtrak Pacific Surfliner is making travel more accessible and convenient with expanded service now in full swing.

The popular rail line, which runs along a scenic 351-mile coastal corridor connecting San Diego to San Luis Obispo, has added a 12th daily round-trip between Los Angeles and San Diego—offering travelers increased flexibility and a traffic-free alternative for attending some of the region’s biggest summer happenings.

Key destinations this summer

From fan conventions to food and drink festivals, the following events are now easier to reach by rail:

  • Del Mar Race Season (July 18–Sept. 7): Opening Day at the iconic Del Mar Racetrack kicks off July 18. Riders can take the train to Solana Beach Station, where complimentary shuttles run on race days.
  • California Wine Festival – Santa Barbara (July 18–19): Wine lovers heading to Chase Palm Park can walk just three minutes from the Santa Barbara Station after arriving on the Surfliner.
  • San Diego Comic-Con (July 24–27): Comic-Con returns to the San Diego Convention Center, drawing thousands of fans, celebrities and creators. The Pacific Surfliner drops passengers at the Santa Fe Depot—just a mile from the action.
  • Ventura County Fair (July 30–Aug. 10): Nicknamed “A Country Fair with Ocean Air,” this beachside fair is steps away from the Ventura Station.
  • Disneyland Resort 70th Celebration (ongoing): The Pacific Surfliner is marking the park’s milestone anniversary with themed train wraps, discounted fares, and special park admission offers. Riders can connect from Anaheim Station to the resort via a free shuttle.

Travel trip and perks

With major events expected to draw large crowds, officials recommend booking early. Passengers with Unreserved Coach tickets can board any train between their chosen stations, with seating available on a first-come, first-served basis.

Pacific Surfliner trains feature reclining seats, power outlets, complimentary Wi-Fi, and onboard cafés with local wines and craft beers. For an enhanced experience, passengers can upgrade to Business Class for a guaranteed seat, complimentary snacks and beverages, and priority boarding in San Diego.
