Monroe teen arrested twice in 2 weeks for gun possession, suspected burglary tools

MONROE, N.C. (QUEEN CITY NEWS) — A Monroe 16-year-old was arrested twice within a two-week period for illegally carrying firearms and being in possession of items commonly linked to burglary.

On June 25, around 2 a.m., Monroe officers stopped the teen and discovered he was carrying a concealed handgun. He also had marijuana, a ski mask, a window punch and a Nissan key fob — all items that can be associated with break-ins.

Because the individual is a juvenile, the case was referred to the Department of Juvenile Justice.

Then on July 8, officers with Monroe’s Aggressive Criminal Enforcement Unit were conducting surveillance on Skywatch Lane, an area under increased attention due to recent criminal activity.

During a traffic stop, the same teen ran from the vehicle. He was quickly located and arrested with the help of a K9 officer and drone technology. At the time of this second arrest, the teen was found to be carrying a .22 caliber rifle.

Following this incident, the department requested a secure custody order through the Department of Juvenile Justice, but that request was denied.
