“We’re seeing a trend in motor vehicle thefts as well as entering an auto,” Sergeant Dallas Willis with the Columbus Police Department said Thursday.
With theft on the rise, Willis said it’s important to remember to lock your car doors and avoid leaving vehicles running unattended.
“I know it’s hot, you want to get the AC going,” Willis said. “Just make sure you don’t leave it running for a long period of time because that gives thieves an opportunity to access your vehicle quickly.”
It may also help to remove or hide popular items for theft in vehicles. According to Willis, those include firearms, money and electronics.
But car theft isn’t the only thing to worry about during the summer. It’s also vacation season for many families, with some leaving their homes unattended for extended periods of time. Willis says residential burglaries tend to increase in the summertime.
You can make your home less of a target by refraining from showing off items of value. Willis said not to leave TV boxes by the road. Plus, it may be helpful to keep your travel plans quiet.
“Don’t advertise going out of town,” Willis said. “We see that a lot of people advertise they are going out of town. People see it, find out where you live and they’ll break into your house.”
Officials advise finding someone you trust to check on your home while you’re away.
