BATESVILLE, Ark. — A longtime Batesville business is fighting to keep its doors open.

Hollywood Bowl, located on Central Avenue, has been a staple in the community since 1961. Now, the bowling alley is facing possible foreclosure due to financial challenges.

Owner Sheila Phillips has operated the business for 27 years. She said a mix of economic factors is putting pressure on the business, including the impact of the economy on small businesses, lasting effects from the COVID-19 pandemic and a decrease in customer traffic.

“I’ve grown to love this sport. I love the camaraderie. I love bowlers and I love their families,” Phillips said. “And the thought of it closing because I failed is the biggest scare.”

Phillips said the bowling alley has become a second home for many people in the community, and for her personally.

“I know about their children, I know where their children are going to college,” she said. “I know when their children are graduating high school. I know when they are having babies. I know when they are getting married.”

In response, Hollywood Bowl has launched a “Save the Lanes” campaign to raise funds and bring people back in. Volunteers lined the street this week with handmade signs encouraging residents to stop by and support the effort.

“The idea of it closing forever or me not being here scares me,” Phillips said. “It scares me for all of these relationships I’ve made.”

As part of the campaign, the bowling alley is offering $10 unlimited bowling for one hour or $5 for a single game, with shoe rental included.

“If you’ve ever had a memory here, if you’ve ever had a date here, or if you met your spouse here—because I’ve made a lot of love matches—I need you to come,” Phillips said. “I need you to come here.”

Hollywood Bowl remains open during regular business hours as the campaign continues.
