Suspect dead after Meigs County officer-involved shooting

MEIGS COUNTY, Ohio (WOWK) – The Meigs County Sheriff’s Office says a suspect has died after firing a self-inflicted gunshot wound during a struggle with deputies.

According to the Meigs County Sheriff’s Office, the incident happened Tuesday in Scipio Township when deputies and detectives went to the scene of a search warrant. They say there was a struggle with the suspect.

The sheriff’s office says that during the struggle, the suspect fired a self-inflicted gunshot wound and was pronounced dead at the scene. According to Meigs County Sheriff Scott Fitch, there is no evidence at this time that any officer fired a weapon during the struggle.

The sheriff says one officer was injured in the struggle, but was not shot. The officer was taken to a hospital to be checked out for injuries, and Fitch says the officer is expected to be fine and should be released this evening.

According to the sheriff’s office, the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation and Identification has been called to the scene to conduct an independent investigation.
