STEPHENSON COUNTY, Ill. (WTVO) — From electricity and water service upgrades, to improvements in grandstands and flower beds, the Stephenson County Fairgrounds are undergoing a $100,000 renovation.

“The fairgrounds have been in this location for over 70 years, so there’s always constant maintenance. And, we’ve been pouring back in well over $100,000 into our fairgrounds for the last couple of years,” said executive manager Kate Boyer.

The fairgrounds will also undertake a multi-phase project that includes new concrete throughout the grandstands and surrounding area, with a focus on improving ease of mobility around the event grounds.

“We are ripping it all out and replacing it with good new concrete. So wheelchairs and strollers and people with lower mobility find it a lot easier to get into the grandstands this year,” Boyer said.

The track, which is used for events such as tractor pulls, has also received an upgrade.

“We’ve redone our track out here with our tractor pull this year. We switched direction of pulling. We’re now going east, and we’re about 340ft track there now for better and bigger tractors to be out there,” said Stephenson County Fair Board President Gary Milke.

The funding comes from grants and sponsorships that the fairgrounds have accumulated.

“Basically, since Covid, we’ve made a focus on investing back into the fairgrounds. So we’ve had a little bit less entertainment, like we haven’t had our big country singers coming,” Boyer said. “But, we’ve used those funds instead to pour them into our grounds so that way we can upgrade our facilities and have a more long-lasting impact.”

The upgrades are expected to be completed before the Stephenson County Fair begins on July 22nd.
