PROVO, Utah (ABC4) — Provo Mayor Michelle Kaufusi denied the sale of an area of city-owned land near Slate Canyon to Splash Summit Water Park.

Mayor Kaufusi posted a video to social media on Tuesday, stating that Slate Canyon is not for sale.

“There’s no question that Splash Summit is a significant business, one that many of our residents love, and I have no issue with the owners wanting to improve their park,” she said in the video. “As for me, the owner’s proposal to buy this land is fully and completely declined.”

At a Provo neighborhood meeting in May, Splash Summit Water Park presented their plans to relocate the park to a different location in Provo, to a 130-acre space of city-owned land near the base of Slate Canyon.

Splash Summit was hoping to build a resort, retail space, parking, other park amenities, better parking, and room for other development opportunities.

Residents were concerned about these plans, and some even created a petition to stop it. A few residents also shared their concerns with ABC4.com. They were excited about updates to the water park, but they were worried about losing the natural beauty of the area, and the impact the park could have on the water catchment basin there.

“No sale can happen without my approval, so this puts an end to it,” Mayor Kaufusi continued.

Mayor Kaufusi said that her team worked with the people who live near Slate Canyon, and they have a “shared vision” for the area: to “enhance” it for residents.

“Under my watch, Provo’s natural treasures are to be preserved, enhanced, and just so we’re absolutely clear, Slate Canyon is not for sale,” she concluded.

ABC4.com reached out to Splash Summit Water Park for comment and is waiting to hear back.
