If awarded, the commission could receive $400,000 to build a shelter in the Albertville area and improve Martling Road from Poplar Springs Road to Burgess Road.
Marshall County District 4 commissioner Joey Baker said the growth of the area and the increase in mobile homes have caused the county to need another community storm shelter. Baker said that current community shelters are being pushed to their limits during storms.
“A lot of people is in mobile homes, they are a target for tornadoes, mobile homes are and there’s a lot of them out there now, not just dwellings but mobile homes,” Baker said. “I actually got a storm shelter out in that area, close to that area, and I’ve got pictures of it during the storm and it is over capacity, it is completely full, so we just need more shelters out there.”
While this is just the commission formally approving that they can start the application, and it could take a while, it is the first step in the process of building another storm shelter.
“The reason why we are applying for the grant is because it’s available and we need some storm shelters in our area,” Baker said. “The population out there has just bloomed.”
Approval of the grant is up to ADECA, and Baker said it could be a while before it gets approved.
