The Shawnee County Historical Society announced on social media that it will be leading a tour of the old Menninger clock tower that overlooks Topeka. Attendees will be taken into the tower at 3 p.m. on Sunday, July 20 and learn about the history of the former Menninger Clinic.
Emily Cowan with Abandoned Kansas got an inside look of the clinic in 2020, producing a film on the structure. She shared some photos with 27 News in 2021 of the interior of the deteriorating building.
The historical society said it is expecting a big turnout for the event which requires a ticket to attend. People will learn about the history of the nearby area prior to the walking tour.
“This will be a short walking tour and properties are not fully handicapped accessible so bear that in mind if you are considering to attend. As you may recall, this structure was built in 1930 and is known for its distinctive design, inspired by the Independence Hall in Philadelphia.”

Members of the historical society will be able to get in for free while others will be charged $10 apiece.
