‘He came at me like Michael Myers’; Janesville man pleads guilty to killing neighbor in 2024

JANESVILLE, Wis. (WTVO) — A Janesville man has pleaded guilty to a lesser charge of reckless homicide after shooting and killing a knife-wielding neighbor during an argument in 2024, prosecutors said Wednesday.

Around 7:30 p.m. on December 17th, 2024, officers went to the 300 block of North High Street for a reported shooting. Upon arrival, they found Tywon Cannon, 51, suffering from a gunshot wound to the chest.

According to Rock County District Attorney Jason Sanders, Foster had been involved in an argument with Cannon, a neighbor at the apartment building, and later went to his door and shot Cannon in the abdomen.

Cannon clung to life until February 4th, 2025, and then succumbed to his injuries.

During the investigation, police identified Foster as the suspect. He was charged with first degree murder and felon in possession of a firearm.

During the court proceedings, witnesses said that Foster was defending himself and that Cannon had threatened him with a butcher knife.

“[He] came towards me with the knife pointed out, like Michael Myers,” Foster told the judge in court on Wednesday.

Foster pleaded guilty on Wednesday to a lesser charge of reckless homicide and felon in possession of a firearm.

“Frankly, there are a lot of unknowns about the specifics,” prosecutor Noah Tylenda told the court.  “But we know three things for certain: Mr. Foster should not have gone back to that apartment, he should not have had a firearm, and without him making those choices, Tywon Cannon would not be dead.”

Foster was sentenced to 20 years in the Wisconsin Prison System, noting that it was illegal for the convicted felon to be in possession of a firearm. He will spend the first ten years in prison and the second on parole.
