According to he program’s officials, the Food Bank will serve 7,500 meals across 145 sites in 13 counties.
The program aims to target children who participate in meal service during the school year, but are left out during the summer months.
“Summer meals are a lifeline for families,” said Julie Yurko, President and CEO of Northern Illinois Food Bank. “More than 1 million students in Northern Illinois rely on free or reduced-price meals during the school year. When school is out, many of these children face hunger. That’s why we’re committed to ensuring every child has the food they need to grow, learn, and thrive.”
No ID, registration, or proof of income is required to obtain the free meal packages. However, children must be 18 or younger, and the meals must be eaten on site.
All meals follow USDA nutrition guidelines and include a grain, protein, milk, and two servings of fruits or vegetables.
Sites will include parks, libraries, schools, churches, and community centers. A list of participating sites and times can be found here.
