ILLINOIS (WCIA) — An 8-year-old boy from Illinois is competing in a nationwide fundraiser to support the National Wildlife Federation (NWF).

Malachi Garcia loves to climb Eastern White Pine trees, catch small lizards and observe animals in their habitats. And now, he’s taking his love of wildlife to the next level in the Colossal Jr. Ranger Competition.

The competition supports the NWF, which is a 90-year-old organization that fights to protect wildlife and wild places in the U.S. by restoring habitats, fighting climate change, and inspiring others to care about conservation.

Malachi is now in the top 1% of competitors nationwide and has already advanced through four other rounds of public voting. The quarterfinals voting ends July 10, and the semi finals and finals will follow. As of Wednesday afternoon, Malachi is in first place. You can vote for him here.

If Malachi wins, he’ll earn $20,000, as well as a trip with wildlife expert Jeff Corwin, an Emmy-winning TV host, biologist, and conservationist. The contest winner will also be featured in Ranger Rick magazine.
