The incident was reported just before noon on Wednesday, July 9, on Interstate 77 southbound near mile marker 29. This is on a bridge between Griffith Street and Catawba Avenue.
Both southbound lanes are closed, and traffic is being diverted into the toll lane. Authorities have not said what led up to the crash.
The Mecklenburg EMS Agency says 12 people with minor injuries were being evaluated at the scene. Of those, 8 were taken to Atrium Carolinas Medical Center. At least two ambulances and MEDIC’s Mass Casualty Bus responded to the incident.
