Three vehicle crash leads to fire, explosion at Herriman Strip Mall

Update

HERRIMAN, Utah (ABC4) — Two bystanders risked their lives to rescue the driver and passenger from one of the burning vehicles involved in the three-car accident that led to an explosion at a Herriman strip mall Saturday night, according to the Unified Fire Dept.

“Two courageous bystanders risked their lives to rescue the driver and passenger from the burning vehicle just moments before it was engulfed in flames,” Unified Fire posted on social media. “As fire crews began suppression efforts, a powerful explosion destroyed one business and caused significant damage to two others.”

ABC4 spoke with Kelly Bird, Unified Fire, who said the three individuals taken to the hospital “are going to live.” Additionally, no workers were located inside the business at the time, according to Bird.

Over 60 firefighters responded to this incident, fire officials said. They came from Unified Fire Authority, South Jordan, West Jordan, West Valley City, Sandy, and Draper fire departments.

All emergency personnel reportedly worked together to battle the blaze.

“Thankfully, no firefighters or law enforcement officers were injured during the incident,” Unified Fire stated. “We are grateful for the bravery of the bystanders and the swift, unified response.”

Cleanup at the site continues and the road closure on 13400 South from 5000 West to 5600 West is now over, according to Bird.

“The fire-damaged property is fenced and off-limits, and the adjacent sidewalk is closed. Pedestrians should use an alternate route through the area,” a press release from Herriman City states. “The long-term status of the multi-tenant commercial building is still being evaluated. Herriman City’s water pump facility, attached to the structure, has been inspected; the equipment is undamaged and the water supply is safe.”

Vehicle owners may retrieve their cars left at the site after talking with Herriman Police at 801-840-4000. Riverton Police are leading this investigation. Witnesses or anyone with information are asked to contact Riverton PD by calling dispatch at 801-840-4000 — case number RV25-11563.

Original Story

HERRIMAN, Utah (ABC4) — Cleanup is underway after a three car accident led to a fire and explosion at a Herriman strip mall late Saturday night.

According to Josh Lee with Riverton City Police, crews were called to the building near 5200 West and 13400 South around 10:15 p.m. on a report of a three vehicle accident, with one of the vehicles colliding with the structure. The first vehicle had a 70-year-old female driver and a 72-year-old male passenger.

The second vehicle involved had a teenage driver with a learner’s permit and multiple occupants, and the third vehicle had a single 26-year-old male driver. All three drivers were taken to the hospital with various injuries, and conditions on the other occupants is unknown.

Lee confirms that all occupants made it out of the building prior to the explosion, with the explosion happening just minutes after one of the vehicles collided with it. The cause of the crash is under investigation.

Portions of the area were under an evacuation order due to a gas leak caused by the crash but the gas has been turned off to the affected structure and all evaucation orders were lifted around 1 a.m.

A road closure on 13400 South from 5000 West to 5600 West will be in effect overnight as crews continue their investigation and cleanup of the incident.

Herriman City Mayor Lorin Palmer issued a statement on the incident:
