FAYETTEVILLE, W.Va. (WVNS) — What first began as a community ribbon cutting event in Fayetteville quickly turned into a protest.

Folks saw this as an opportunity to make their voices heard to U.S. Senator Shelley Moore Capito, who was in attendance.

Protestors stopped the senator to explain their thoughts on the Big Beautiful Bill, which she helped pass during the week of July 4. Some of the major concerns of protestors include Medicaid, Medicare, rural hospitals, and the WV Adult Ed Program.

Pam Garrison is another protestor that is concerned about West Virginia’s future.

“How are we going to be able to afford health care? How are we going to be able to afford these hospital bills? We are going to lose the only hospital we have in Fayette County. We have senior citizens everywhere. They have cut their Meals on Wheels,” said Garrison.

One of the protestors from the Adult Ed program told 59News she lost her job due to recent cuts, along with more than 80,000 others nationwide.

On the other hand, U.S. Senator Shelley Moore Capito told WBOY’s affiliate 59News that the bill helps small businesses, families, Medicaid, SNAP, and other food programs. She claimed the bill will help crack down on the fraudulent use of these programs, which will make them more sustainable.

“I thought, is the whole bill in the best interests of the people that I represent? I do believe it is, because I think it sustains these programs for the long term and also keeps everybody’s taxes lower so that we can prosper and grow jobs,” said Senator Capito.

Despite Capito’s claims, protestors were not convinced.

“[Capito] is worried about waste, fraud and abuse, but she is worried about it at a level of like nickels and dimes. The waste, fraud, and abuse is with the millionaires and billionaires. It is just sad that she is happy to take food out of the mouths of hungry children,” said Colleen Laffey, another protestor.

Only time will tell what effect the Big Beautiful Bill will have on West Virginia.
