According to court documents, 36-year-old Jamaris Ladell Smith started his string of armed robberies around 11 p.m. on January 17, 2023. At that time, he entered a Sam’s Mart on Sharon Road, pointed a handgun at the store clerk and demanded cash.
Smith reportedly told the worker she would be killed if she “made the wrong move,” officials said. The clerk, fearing for her life, placed the cash drawer on the counter and Smith took the money and left the scene.
Between 3:30 p.m. on Jan. 18 and 6:10 a.m. on Jan. 19, Smith allegedly robbed five more businesses at gunpoint in Charlotte while making similar comments and threats, such as, “Don’t move and don’t scream. Give me everything you got,” and “It’s not worth it, give me all the money.”
The five victim businesses in the 13-hour period were:
- Walgreens at 7115 E. WT Harris Blvd
- CVS at 3110 The Plaza
- Circle K at 4474 Randolph Road
- 7-Eleven at 8101 Old Concord Road
- Burger King at 4709 Sharon Road
On Jan. 20, Smith was arrested after investigators reviewed surveillance videos from the robberies and were able to identify Smith as the suspect. Some of the clothes Smith wore during the robberies were found at his residence, and the firearm he used was found in his vehicle, officials said.
On February 16, 2024, Smith pled guilty to six counts of Hobbs Act robberies and brandishing a firearm during a violent crime. Following his 14-year prison sentence, Smith is ordered to serve three years of supervised release.
