According to the Indiana Department of Transportation, the incident happened on I-70 eastbound at mile marker 76.7 between Holt Road and Tibbs Avenue around 5 a.m.
INDOT’s alert indicated the crash involved a fatality. Indiana State Police said the crash involved a wrong-way driver and confirmed two vehicles were involved.
Nick Klingkammer with ISP said dispatchers received multiple calls about a wrong-way driver going west in the eastbound lanes of I-70. It eventually led to a head-on collision at mile marker 77.
One driver died, while the other was taken to an area hospital with serious injuries. The interstate was closed for several hours for further investigation and crash reconstruction.
I-70 eastbound reopened just before 8:30 a.m., but drivers should still expect delays until normal traffic flow resumes.
