BLOOMINGTON, Ind. — A Bloomington man died Saturday night in a fireworks-related incident in western Monroe County, according to the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office.
At approximately 10:29 p.m. on July 5, deputies responded to a report of a serious injury in the 7000 block of West Tabor Hill Road. Upon arrival, first responders found 23-year-old Tyler Pinkley with traumatic injuries believed to have been caused while he was handling fireworks. He was pronounced dead at the scene by the Monroe County Coroner’s Office.
According to the Sheriff’s Office, about a dozen witnesses were interviewed, and evidence was collected at the scene. Initial findings suggest the incident was accidental. Witnesses told investigators that Pinkley attempted to light a large mortar firework while holding it directly above his head. Friends said they tried to stop him, but Pinkley insisted he had done it before and dismissed their concerns.
