Officer-involved shooting under investigation in uptown Charlotte; public urged to avoid area
The incident happened Sunday morning around 6 a.m. on the 600 block of North Church Street. CMPD’s Homicide Unit is handling the investigation, and authorities are urging people to avoid the area.
Details about what led to the shooting have unfolded in an early Sunday morning press conference.
According to a spokesperson at the press conference, the officer was injured in the shooting, as well as the suspect he was interacting with during a domestic-related disturbance call. The spokesperson said the officer was shot in the leg by the man after a brief confrontation.
The officer is in stable condition and was assisted on scene by other officers. The spokesperson said the officer had to get a procedure done when he was in critical condition.
The spokesperson said a foot chase ensued between officers and the suspects, and the suspect was captured. He remains in police custody.
The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department will provide more information later Sunday evening.
There is a heavy police presence in the area, and investigators are expected to remain on site for several hours. Law enforcement urges the public to avoid the area of uptown Charlotte during their investigation.
