Sullivan’s announcement follows LL Cool J’s decision not to perform. Both Jazmine Sullivan and LL Cool J were set to headline the concert.
In a post to her Instagram story, the Philadelphia native, and GRAMMY Award-winning R&B singer and songwriter wrote the following:
In this life we are only measured by how we uphold our morals and standards, by what we choose to fight for through participation or protest. Today I choose to not perform at the Wawa Welcome America concert and stand with Philly’s DC33 until the city and union find a way to bring fair living wages to our working class. I love my city and I believe in you. Hopefully we will get to celebrate when things are better.

Mayor Cherelle Parker acknowledged Jazmine Sullivan’s decision and released the following statement:
Jazmine Sullivan has decided not to perform at WAWA Welcome America’s July 4th Concert tonight on the Parkway.
I respect Jazmine’s decision, and understand her desire to see our City unified. I feel exactly the same — our mission every day is ‘One Philly, a United City.’ Jazmine, your hometown loves you!
The Party on the Parkway is ON for this evening! Come down and see JOJO, Alvaro Diaz, DJ Ghost and Friends, DJ Hollywood, and enjoy the food, the holiday atmosphere, and then all the Fireworks tonight!
Mayor Cherelle L. Parker
In a statement, DC 33 President Greg Boulware applauded Jazmine Sullivan for her decision:
I am profoundly humbled by Jazmine Sullivan’s decision to back out of her performance tonight in a show of solidarity with the hardworking men and women of District Council 33. It’s truly refreshing to witness a celebrity of her stature and a native Philadelphian recognizing and valuing the tireless dedication of municipal workers. Ms. Sullivan, your courageous stand serves as a powerful reminder of the importance of supporting those who tirelessly contribute to the well-being of our communities. We applaud and thank you for your unwavering support and exemplary leadership.
Greg Boulware, President, AFSCME District Council 33
The concert will still go on at 7 p.m., as scheduled, with JOJO, Alvaro Diaz, DJ Ghost and Friends, and DJ Hollywood performing.
