CHARLOTTE, N.C. (QUEEN CITY NEWS) — Honoring the spirit of freedom and community — that’s the annual tradition of the naturalization ceremony at the Charlotte Museum of History.

And on this Independence Day, it was no different. The free Fourth of July event was highlighted by the oath-taking for the new U.S. citizens.

“I’m feeling so excited,” said one of the naturalized citizens. “This is an achievement, this a goal I was looking forward to a long time ago, and I finally I got it. I feel privileged to live in this country. It is amazing.”

The event was held amid a time of uneasiness for immigrants in the country.

Also, part of the celebration was the Meck Dec 250 exhibit to commemorate the holiday. The county’s leaders reportedly drafted a declaration of independence a full year before the one recognized across the nation. There is no record of it; however, the date is recognized on the North Carolina state flag.
